Although much lip service is given to the idea that employees are really just internal customers, and that they have needs that should be fulfilled by employers, the bottom line
really pertains to money. Many employees today are effectively "wined and dined" with PC rhetoric and with an atmosphere of caring, but they are not given more money at the
bottom levels of the hierarchy. These bottom feeders are considered to be "valuable" and this is suggested by all that goes on within the walls of a corporation but the
truth is that they are not very valuable. Money is still the deciding factor in who is worth what. The Wal Mart cashier for instance is given a great deal
of attention, deemed employee of the month and given a bonus, but that does not make for a happy individual. Karl Marx early on recognized that people needed more than
just a paycheck. They need to feel connected to their work and have a sense of belongingness to the company. Durkheim also postulated that anomie left people estranged from society
and while both theorists have similar takes on labor, Marx contends that the capitalist system is what is really to blame for all of these woes. Marx and Durkheim
have always been concerned, in different ways, with the issue of social inequality. Marx views things however in a different manner. Where he sees social inequality as
a significant problem as well, this theorist instead insists that it is capitalism and not necessarily the division of labor that is relevant. It is who embraces control that is
