important to the story. These gods and goddesses, or the figures of the Divine, are players that often serve to control the events of these ancient stories to one degree
or another. We see this in Homers Odyssey and in The Epic of Gilgamesh. In the following paper we examine each story individually and then compare and contrast the two
in relationship to the role played by the Divine in each classic tale. The Odyssey One of the most important divine figures in Homers story is Athena. She
is the one who fights for Odysseus and ensures that he have as much support as possible when striving to find his way home. Without her, and considering the intervention
of other supreme beings, it is perhaps likely that Odysseus would have never completed his journey. However, it should also be noted that perhaps all the gods were "in favor
of Odysseus return" and as such "all he had to fight was the challenges Poseidon threw at him" (The Odyssey). In one examination of the role of Athena, an
author notes, "In the Odyssey by Homer, Athena has an incredible relationship with Odysseus. After reading the epic poem, one can witness the very complete, very extensive bond she develops
with not only Odysseus but with the other characters as well" (Athena, the Goddess). For example, "At the opening of the book, Athena begs her father Zeus to allow her
to aid Odysseus, so he can go home to his family (Odyssey 1-2). She says,My own heart is broken for Odysseus (Odyssey 3)" (Athena, the Goddess). She even enhances his
