The question as to whether there is a distinction between mind and body has been debated for centuries. Among the most prominent of the
theorists in this debate is Descartes. Descartes view on the distinction of the human mind and body, the view that the body is a separate entity from the mind,
forms the framework, in fact, of both historical and contemporary thought on this subject. Starting in the 1950s J.J.C. Smart began
to write prolifically about a theory which had been dubbed the "Identity Theory". This theory is, in fact, a theory which arose during this same decade with men such
as U.T. Place and Herbert Feigl (Borst III). To Smart the separation of brain and mind were insignificant in terms of the states and processes which they experienced (Borst
93). Obviously the two concepts of brain and mind must remain distinguishable, however, in that the brain is an anatomical organ which can be quantified and the term "mind"
is applied to an intangible object which encompasses such concepts as thoughts, feelings, determination, and intelligence. Smarts philosophies regarding the correlation
between brain and mind are supported by a number of historic philosophers and scientists. Karl Vogt, for example, attempted to clarify the connection by stating that the brain secretes
thought just as the liver secretes bile (Smart 215). In other words the brain is the anatomical entity which is responsible for thought production. Leucippus, Hobbes, La Mettrie,
and dHolbach took similar stances on the relationship between brain and mind (Borst 93). All of these theories, however, rests on the original work of Descartes.
