The story achieves this to admirable effect by a calculated use of events that express the dehumanizing nature of the war experience, as well as a variety of narrative devices which stylistically enhance the existent themes. In analyzing the text, it is important to remember that Europe was entering one of the darkest periods in modern history, an era that would give birth to the first explicitly existentialist thinkers such as Albert Camus, and later, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone Beauvoir, and others. The philosophy purported by these individuals, derived in many ways from the experiences of the world during World Wars I and II, states that life holds no inherent value, and that all value is a human projection. Consequently, humans must inject their own sense of value into their lives, for the purpose of giving their lives a sense of meaning. The universe, for its part, will not and cannot provide one. Remarques novel is in many ways a fictionalized expression of existentialist themes, wherein the protagonist relates to the reader a progression of experiences which undermine all idealistic notions about the world with harsh reality. The result is that the protagonist has no choice but to relinquish all of his previously held values as vulgar absurdities, incompatible with the reality of his experiences. The existentialist themes in "All Quiet on the Western Front" receive their greatest focus in the novels seventh chapter. This paragraph helps the student begin to analyze how chapter seven represents the dissolution of Pauls values by showing him in action away from the front.
