could do no wrong. Could Disney be heading for trouble? Disney is an American mainstay, something that people consider a household name. Investor Sid Bass, whose family owns a large
part of Disney commented that the company is very well run (Knowlton & Sheeline, 1989). While some may have illusions that Disney spends money like water, and then charges
the people for it, nothing could be farther from the truth. Since 1984, when Walts nephew Roy Disney, stormed the Magic Kingdom he shook up the company which culminated
into the major success that was seen in the 1980s (Knowlton et al 1989). The company is a business run like many others but with more imagination; thus, many of
the techniques used at Disney have relevance for any manager who wants to explore creativity without giving away the store (1989). Disney CEO Michael Eisner was integral to the
process. He installed a formal system of checks and balances where every creative endeavor at Disney "happens within a financial box, with reasonable risk and cost as the walls" (Knowlton
et al, 1989, p.111). In fact, a strategic team crunches numbers and the executives make quick decisions on whether or not to proceed (1989). This process helps to explain Disneys
astounding success. Yes, Disney has a budget. By most observations, that budget must be quite large. At the same time, it is more than just another company as it has
managed to creep into the world view, expounding on political topics and controversial subjects, while still coming out with a bright shining, wholesome image. Few rival the companys success and
many embrace the Disney characters in their daily lives. It is hard to believe that it all began when a young artist named Walt sketched a picture of a mouse.
