life is threatened. Human beings can function with breathing problems, but diseases that go untreated create dangers. While not all diseases of the lung are preventable or treatable, asthma
is an enigma of modern man. While it is a treatable condition, there is a great deal of mystery surrounding its prevalence, origins and endurance. While no one is ever
really cured of asthma, it often improves over time as air passages get larger. Young children who have a significant number of attacks tend to outgrow it; often, it lies
dormant and sometimes resurfaces in old age. And while asthma remains a mystery of sorts, some people do not find it mysterious at all that minorities have a harder time
with it. Some chalk it up to genetics. Certain races or people of certain ethnic backgrounds are simply more likely to become asthmatic. On the other hand, there is the
idea that certain conditions make one more likely to get asthma and these are not biological conditions. The environment plays a key role in the prevalence of asthma. Akinbami, Rhodes
& Lara (2005) suggest that "many studies have demonstrated that these large disparities in morbidity and mortality may be due in part to differences in health care access, use, and
quality" (p.1254). First, in examining this issue, what is known about the fact that some minorities seem to be predisposed to the condition? One study conducted in 1990 involved Spanish,
