the distinction of unifying much of Western Europe and is often considered the Father of Europe. He was first King of the Franks and then Emperor and ushered in the
Carolingian Renaissance. One of the greatest rulers in European history, his reign can often be divided into five distinctive periods of both social and political change. This paragraph helps the
student assess the first dimension of Charlemagnes career. Charlemagne, also referred to as Charles the Great, began the first portion of his reign after his father Pepin III died. After
his death, Charlemagne and his brother Carloman shared the regency of the Frankish kingdom. During this time Charlemagne was able to help Bavaria declare independence and come to an understanding
with Desiderius, king of the Lombards (Ganshof, 1949). The death of Carloman in 771 ushered in Charlemagnes second period. He quickly seized control of Carlomans territory thus declaring himself monarch.
Not only this but Charlemagne retracted the agreement he had set up with the Lombards, a move that appeared to show the newly declared monarch wished to follow his fathers
foreign policy. In a move to protect the Frank region from the ongoing threat of the Saxons, Charlemagne decided to march into Saxony. By 777, Charlemagnes troops were spreading Christianity
all through Saxony. As he was directing marches in Saxony, Pope Hadrian I ordered Charlemagne to take up arms against the Lombards. Charlemagne did so and declared himself king of
