In Robert Harms book "The Diligent: A Voyage Through the Worlds of the Slave Trade" we are presented with the voyage of one particular ship whose journals were quite extensively kept by the captain. The following paper examines this book, discussing whether or not the Africans aboard this ship were victims. Were Africans Victims? In looking at whether or not Harmss book illustrates Africans as victims we look at various quotes from the book itself. The first section addresses one part of the book where Harms indicates that one particular person, Pauline Villeneuve, was freed and this caused a great deal of dismay with slave owners who felt that their slaves would also desire freedom (Harms, 2003; 13). Such a simple illustration surely indicates that the rights of the Africans were non existent and yet the people who owned slaves feared they would make trouble perhaps. This is a subtle, but very clear indication that the Africans were victims of their owners. In another excerpt we see how the Africans were also immersed in their own form of slavery. Apparently the Africans that many Europeans would get depended greatly on whether or not they could purchase slaves from other Africans: "Snelgrave noted that such captives were usually sold to Africans and only rarely to Europeans" (Harms, 2003; 246). These particular slaves were often kept by the Africans if it was felt that they could pay off whatever debt they owed. In this we see that perhaps some of the Africans were victims and others were victimizers. Slavery was very much a part of the African way of life and was not necessarily considered a bad thing for it was used to pay off debts and to otherwise support communities.
