For those students that have access, computer technology can be a phenomenal educational tool. Other students, however,
simply do not have adequate access to computer technology. While some students have computer technology both in their schools and their homes, others depend solely on school equipment to
meet their educational needs. In August 2000, in fact, only forty-one percent of U.S. households now had Internet access (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2000). The dichotomy that results in
terms of social advantages is more than apparent and this dichotomy extends beyond the individual to the community and to the nation as a whole. Riley (2005) reports:
"Communities with the tools and skills to compete in the digital economy are at a distinct
advantage over communities that dont". Students that do not have access to the Internet
in their homes are simply left behind academically. The reasons for this lack, however, can be varied. In most it is either because they cannot afford computer technology.
In other cases, however, it might be explained as being due to the fact that they do not have the supportive home environment that are conducive to the utilization of
computer technology. Numerous sources emphasize the importance of computer technology in the teaching/learning process. The Internet is a particularly important aspect of
that technology. It is, in fact, an indispensable tool in many aspects of our lives. We attend to more and more personal and business communication though e-mail.
