implemented in such a way as to see a totalitarian government, but that is really not a part of the communist model necessarily. However, totalitarianism is associated with fascism. Also, there are some actual similarities between the two that are interesting to note. In order to compare and contrast the two ideologies, it helps to explore them. What is the definition of communism? One fair definition is as follows: " ...theoretical economic system characterized by the collective ownership of property and by the organization of labor for the common advantage of all members" ("Communism," 2007). What is fascism? One explanation is as follows: "Fascism is a form of extreme right-wing ideology that celebrates the nation or the race as an organic community transcending all other loyalties. It emphasizes a myth of national or racial rebirth after a period of decline or destruction. To this end, fascism calls for a "spiritual revolution" against signs of moral decay such as individualism and materialism, and seeks to purge "alien" forces and groups that threaten the organic community" (Lyons, 2008). Lyons (2008) goes on to say that fascism is also associated with violence, youth and male supremacy (Lyons, 2008). It sometimes promotes the idea of racial superiority (Lyons, 2008). Fascism takes a populist approach and it tries to activate the people against perceived oppressors (Lyons, 2008). Fascism tries to seek a group that wants to gain power over the state (Lyons, 2008). There are many similarities between fascism and communism. One is that both have a populist bent and both try to corral the people to oppose the forces in power.
