10/2001 Please The term Pre-Socratic in philosophy refers to philosophers or members of a school of philosophy prior to the influences of
Socrates, who were at the center of developing civilizations. In contrast, the Socratic philosophers included those students of Socrates and those who directed their world view based on the
principles of Socrates. What should be understood when relating a comparison of Pre-Socratic and Socratic philosophers is that Socrates himself grew and developed as a philosopher in the pre-Socratic
era, and many of the elements that were central to the Pre-Socratic view of the world were the basis for Socrates own philosophical perspectives. The major questions posed by
the pre-Socratics and Socratics varied significantly. The pre-Socratics, for example, considered questions of substance, issues related to mathematics, concepts like power, motion, change existence and the atom. The
Socratics, on the other hand, considered more tenuous philosophical questions, like the origins and process of justice, mans role in the polis, the distinctions of happiness and the development of
the soul. In understanding the influence the pre-Socratics had, it is beneficial to consider some of the major questions and the philosophers who addressed them. The philosophers of Miletus,
those designated in the Milesian or Inonian School, recognized that the transformation of the existing culture under the domination of divine kingdoms, focused on the nature of change as a
