pair of pants, or I "need" a new car. We say this in order to express our desire for something but do we truly mean "need" or are we
actually verbalizing a want or desire? The truth is, at a very basic level, there is very little that we actually need to survive. We need food.
We need water. We need shelter and clothing. But beyond that, there is very little else that it imperative to our very survival. So these very basic
things could certainly be termed as necessities. They are necessary because without them we would cease to exist. So once we
accept that our need/necessities are actually very few, we come to understand that the rest of the "stuff" actually belongs in the realm of comforts and/or luxuries. Its both
shocking and empowering to make this realization, as so often we come to take lifes comforts and luxuries so much for granted that we transfer them to the "need" category.
Beyond our needs are comforts, and these are the things which make our lives easier, more comfortable, and more enjoyable.
While we need shelter, its really nice if it includes indoor plumbing and hot running water. Its also really nice if our house is cooled in the summer
by air conditioning and that we stay toasty warm in the winter with a down comforter that cost a pretty penny. These things are all comforts and truly enhance
our lives. But, in this regard, its important to note that comforts are not static, and in fact are always changing.
