least for a time - to the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity. This paper is a diary of the fictional Comtesse de Lyon and her observations of the turbulent events of the 1780s and 1790s. Discussion Madeline, the Comtesse de Lyon, is just 20 years of age, but she was married at 16 and is already a mother three times over. She is a noblewoman by birth, as her father is the Comte Philippe Gaston, but her family is of the Nobility of the Robe while her husbands family is of the Nobility of the Sword (Kreis, Lecture 11). While both the Nobility of the Sword and the Nobility of the Robe were members of the "Second Estate" (the clergy was the "First Estate," the nobility the Second Estate, and everyone else the Third Estate) they were not equal (Kreis, Lecture 11). The Nobility of the Sword was the more prestigious of the two; its members served the King at Versailles and in many cases could trace their families back hundreds of years (Kreis, Lecture 11). The Nobility of the Robe had much less influence and far lower status, though they were still nobles (Kreis, Lecture 11). By marrying the Comte de Lyon, Madeline has moved up in society. But now she is looking at a series of events unfolding around her that will change her life forever. Her observations are catalogued in her diary, found many years after her death.
