noted that if it werent for the fact that the author of this book also wrote The Tale of Genji, which is widely considered to be the first novel ever
written, few people would bother with this obscure book. It is highly detailed and meticulously rendered, so that it is a great resource for scholars of medieval Japan, but probably
has little appeal for the ordinary reader. Most of the narrative centers on the birth of the crown prince. This section is a study in contrasts: the author discusses
the beauty of the scene but juxtaposes that with the anxiety over the impending delivery: at one point, they shave some of the Queens hair; a footnote to the text
tells readers that this was only done if the person was thought to be in grave danger; she could be ordained a priestess very quickly if things went wrong.1 The
palace is bustling with servants, nursemaids and priests; people are packed in so tightly the rooms become warm and they grow dizzy; everyone seems to be excited, worried and self-conscious
at the same time. And religion plays a huge part in the scene. The Queen is very uncomfortable, waiting for the baby to come, and she lies "ill at ease"
all day (Murasaki, 1920). In addition, men "cried at the top of their voices to scare away evil spirits. There assembled not only the priests who had been summoned here
