as the Devils Decade due to the economic depression that was felt throughout the world during that time. However, according to a great deal of evidence the depression experienced in Britain was nothing like the impact the depression made in the United States. While there was a depression it apparently only truly lasted from 1931-1932, which does not constitute a decade of suffering, there is evidence that many conditions remained depressed, although the nation was also thriving in some ways. For example, the middle 30s "saw what has been called the largest and most sustained period of growth in the whole of the inter-war period" which clearly illustrates that the depression felt around the world was not necessarily affecting Britain the same way (Simpson 1986 page 234). At the same time it appears as though poverty was rampant. Rose, for example, illustrates how "George Orwell described being borne through the monstrous scenery of slag-heaps, chimneys, piled scrap-iron, foul canals" where "he spotted a young woman kneeling in the back yard of a slum house poking a stick up a foul drainpipe" (Rose page 3 of fax). The images seen in the streets of Britain indicated that the country was experiencing anything but economic success and advancement. This makes one wonder why the economy was doing well and people were suffering in many different ways. And Rose further indicates that Orwells grim views cannot really be relied on but yet they cannot be dismissed either, which further complicates an analysis of the Devils Decade.
