he told a good story and he was considered to be very knowledgeable regarding "international current affairs" (Stephens 48). West once stated, "I have never claimed to be anything other
than a storyteller, although theres a bit of the philosopher in me" (Stephens 48). One of his works, "The Devils Advocate," is a novel that is clearly a look at
philosophy as well as a story that is just a well told tale. The following paper first presents a brief biography of Morris West. The paper then offers a summary/review
of his novel, and then discusses where it fits in terms of literary genre. Biography "Morris West was born in Melbourne as the oldest of six children. He
studied at St. Marys College, St. Kilda, Victoria, and at the University of Melbourne, receiving his B.A. in 1937" (Books and Writers). In the beginning Morris wanted, more than anything
else, to be a Christian Brother. For many years he was a member of this Order. "From 1933 he taught in New South Wales and Tasmania, but left before taking
his final vows. During the World War II West served in the Australian Imperial Forces Corps of Signals, in the South Pacific, from 1939 to 1943" (Books and Writers). It
was while he was stationed in Queensland that Morris wrote his first novel. It was titled "A Moon in My Pocket." "It was based on his experiences in the
religious order, and appeared in 1945 under the name of Julian Morris" (Books and Writers). In the year 1943 Morris became one of the secretaries to William Morris Hughes,
