Faust. It is an ancient story and one that continues to entertain and intrigue many a viewer or reader. In t his story the Devil is constantly tempting Faust, attempting
to get him over to the dark side. The following paper examines how the Devil is clearly present in the characters of the black poodle, the scholar and the nobleman.
The Devil in Faust In the beginning of the story, once the Devil has informed God that he will try to get Faust to his side, the reader/viewer
sees Faust and his friend Wagner taking a walk and talking. Faust notices a dog that has essentially been circling them for some time and asks his friend, "Dost mark
how round us, with wide spiral curves, He wheels, each circle closer than before? And, if I err not, he appears to me A line of fire upon his track
to leave" (Geothe Part I). His friend sees it only as a simple black poodle and he claims that Faust is simply imagining things. But Faust clearly feels something about
this dog that is not right, that is dark and foreboding and possessed of some magic. Faust ultimately takes this poodle home and then engages in sitting down and
studying the Bible. At this point the dog begins to bark and growl, while clearly running around the room, in a frenzy. Such information clearly indicates that something is amiss
with the dog, that the dog is disturbed at the fact he is studying the Bible, which only makes the dog a darker being following Fausts examination of him outside.
It then becomes clear that the dog is the Devil when "the poodle scurried behind the stove, and when he emerged, he had taken the form of Mephistopheles" (Faust by
