and the South. The North has certain characteristics including frigid winters and big business where the South continues to be equated with sprawling farms and a slower existence. And while
these characteristics persist, one thing is clear. The history of each of the regions are vastly different. There were slave states and free states and although slavery did exist above
the Mason-Dixon line, there was a difference. There was a difference in terms of how slaves were treated as well as a difference in terms of the need for them.
Slaves were needed down south. It was woven into the economy. Without slaves, the South would suffer a great deal. From the inception of the colonies there were notable differences.
The character of the people to settle North was different from that of the Southerners. Different people would reach the shores and there were many more slaves in the South.
Through the years, from the Revolution until the Civil War, the free and slave states developed differently. For instance, the northern states were industrializing and the southern states
remained entrenched in cotton. This in part explains the story. The Southern economy was reliant on farming whereas the climate in the North was not quite as conducive to farming.
Although it is true that perhaps the South might have become more prone to industrial life, there was a gold mine in the farm lands. The farmers were not about
to give it up. It is similar to someone today suggesting that if one does not like the fact that their job was shipped to Mexico via NAFTA, they should
