at the end of World War Two when the British regained Singapore after the Japan surrendered and a time of poverty and loss of status was seen to impact
on the citizens of the city state. The need to develop the nation was seen as important for the economic and social future of the country. A plan to join
Malaysia lasted for two years, between 1963 - 1965, after this the are became independent (CIA, 2002). The idea had been that as part of a larger nation development would
be easier. However, it is in the 1960s and 1970s we see this nation state transform from an underdeveloped state with high levels of poverty, into a nation state with
the foundation for strong growth and high levels of international trade resulting in high income per captia levels In looking at the beginning if this short, but definitive
era in Singapore history the start may be seen as a time of underdevelopment. The history of colonial occupation had left the area with no specific social identify (Le Blanc,
1984). In 1959 the political party ; the Peoples Action Party gained power (Le Blanc, 1984). The trade at this time was mostly that of a trading port, and the
area had also been served as a military base due to the strategic location of the state (Le Blanc, 1984). This left Singapore in a self sustaining cycle of under
development, Todaro (quoted in Le Blanc, 1984), states that underdevelopment has three major components, these are 1; low levels of living in absolute terms, with not enough goods to sustain
life, inadequate healthcare, low levels of education, 2; Self esteem, here Todaro looks at the identity dignity, recognition and humour of a people, this was also seen as low in
