skills that require the application of ideas and concepts learned elsewhere in an abstract form, but if we adopt Piaget ideas are we undervaluing the development processes and the abilities
of younger children? Jean Piaget was a human developmental psychologist who worked in the 1920s. The use of the developmental model that
he founded is used in both the psychology field as in the consideration of education. The approach taken by Piaget was an holistic approach to learning, where there were many
factors, and the entire environment would impact on the way that a child learnt, this induced consideration of the different ways in which learning might take place, including reading and
listening as well as the way in which they are allowed and can explore and experiencing their own environment an develop thinking and reasoning skills (Murray, 1996).
To consider if the theory of Piaget is correct and problem solving abilities only form in late childhood we first need to look at the developmental
model of Piaget and what developments are seen as taking place at the different stages of childhood. There are four main stages of childhood development according to Piaget, these can
be defined by age, however, with any definition ages are guidelines rather than rules. The first age is from birth to two
