This paper explains how physical education and recreation became popular through the influence of several people including Gulick, Beecher, and Hanna. THE CIVIL WAR AND THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION The physical fitness movement in America which started before the Civil War, declined rapidly as America became entrenched in the throes of the War Between the States. It was not until after the Civil War and people found themselves with more leisure time on their hands that the physical education and recreation movement became active again (University of Toledo 2002). With the Industrial Revolution along came more sedentary jobs as machinery took over most of the physical work that used to be done by hand. Americans found themselves doing less physical activity at their jobs and becoming a nation of overweight and less physically fit individuals. "The cost of industrialization and urbanization became glaringly apparent starting in the 1950s and 1960s. An epidemic of hypokinetic diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and Type II diabetes, never before prevalent, began to be recognized as the leading causes of disease and death (19). The lifestyle improvements brought in part by the Industrial Revolution had apparently come with an unwanted and alarming cost to health" (Dalleck and Kravitz, 2002, PG). Due to the industrial revolution people were moving from rural areas to more urban areas to take well-paying jobs in the industrial centers of many states. This saw people with more leisure time on their hands once they got off work every evening. With no farm crops or land to tend, the beginning of the era of the nine to five workday was taking an alarming toll on the physical fitness of America.
