The Linux operating system kernel is considered one of the most successful PC based operating systems in history. That success can be attributed
to the close collaboration and work of several key individuals. Linus Torvalds, in particular, is to be credited with the vision that was ultimately to become Linux. Linux
wasnt immediate by any means. Indeed, it took some ten years of hard work to develop the idea into a functioning operating system that could stand shoulder to shoulder
with other operating systems on the market. Moon and Sproull review the history of the development of Linux, an accomplishment that credits its
success, in part at least, to the contributions of numerous volunteers. They note that volunteers ranged from individuals to groups in excess of a thousand people, people located sometimes
in one location and sometimes spread out over many locations. Additionally, over "3,000 developers and countless other contributors distributed over ninety countries on five continents" involved in the development
of Linux (Moon and Sproull 382). Their work coupled with that of between what some say were only several hundred programmers to in excess of 40,000 programmers (Moon and Sproull
382). Moon and Sproull (382) emphasize that while there was careful "planning, coordination, and supervision" inherent in this project there was no micromanagement. Instead, there was collaboration between developers
