Japanese economy was in tatters. The devastation was felt throughout all the sectors of society, the need to change the economy structure in order to facilitate an economic recovery became a priority of the post war government. There was a recognised need to develop in order to survive and thrive. The country was already one that had developed a capitalist economy. The development, as we now know was a success. The turnaround was amazing and many of the lesson learnt came form looking at other countries. If we wish to consider the way that Japan developed in the post war years that are many tools that may be used. One of the more useful tools is that Porters Diamond model. Porters Diamond model is a useful model for analysing the competitive environment and the development of countries. This works n a similar way to the five forces model but the more direct influences are considered. In graphical form this can be seen as a diamond with four facets and the business in the middle. The influences that this encompasses are firstly the factor conditions. Secondly, the demand conditions (Porter, 1999). Third the related and supporting industries and last the firm strategy and rivalry (Porter, 1999, Weller, 1999). Just as with any model the accuracy will depend on the quality and accuracy of the input information, especially when we consider the very broad influences it considers. This tool is it is suitable for a wider range of uses, Porter describes it as: "microeconomic-based approach to economic development for governments" (Porter, 1999).
