the biggest and most marked political movement over the last century has been the march of democracy with more and more countries adopting democratic ideals. This occurs in divergent manners.
One country where this has occurred, but due to the nature of the process and the history surrounding democratic adoption, there are still fears that the current political structure will
fail is Brazil. If we look at the historical context of democracy in Brazil it is possible to see how the many past influences are reflected in todays situation.
Brazil is a country that has been inhabited for millennia. In the sixteenth century Pedro Alvares Cabal landed and the following three centuries saw the occupation and population of the
country by the Portuguese as Brazil became a Portuguese colony. The basis of the work in the country, which included timber, gold mines and agriculture, mainly sugar cane, was based
on slavery (Bethell, 1998). In 1808 Brazil was the destination tat Maria I if Portugal choose when fleeing Napoleon. Whilst she, and her son, the future Joao VI of Portugal
were in Brazil trade increased and ports opened and trade took place, primarily between Brazil and Britain. Maria I returned to Portugal in 1821, but by this time Brazil had
seen a change in its perceived status, now seen as a kingdom that was united with Portugal (Bethell, 1998). In 1822 there was
the declaration of independence, with the declaration made by Dom Pedro I of Brazil and IV of Portugal. In reality this was not true independence as the crown remained with
