third world countries that continue to struggle. It is thought that to some extent, globalization had helped to close the chasm between the first and third worlds, and it has
also in some way created economic homogeneity in that there is now a world economy to speak of. Still, there are the townspeople, the locals, the children who still have
no shoes, the families with no running water, and it is these things which continue to be a concern. Under the umbrella of globalization are a broad array of industries
("Tourism," 2001). Critics are concerned that tourism is by no means an opportunity for development in the region and may even be detrimental to the local traditions, and the culture
that is indigenous to the people (2001). It can also harm the environment (2001). All of those claims are lodged against globalization in general, and while many are valid concerns,
tourism has special concerns. Tourism in some way tweaks the government, prompts it to bend rules, and so forth. It is as if the government has to show its best
face, and will hide those who live in squalor, thus perpetuating the problem of poverty. Tourism in India makes the country an exhibition to first world tourists, something that seems
to coerce government to cater to tourists. Tourists are free to transgress local rules with minimum penalties for example. Spaces and places are planned and designed to be exotic in
order to retain its third world charm. The main problem is that such tourist planning comes at the expense of real development that keeps India a third world country. Again,
