Most desire not only the ability to engage in social activity but also to be able to have freedom. Rousseau once said something to the effect that man is born
free but seems to be in chains everywhere. In prison, the chains are literal and the isolation can be tiring. Of course, in prison, inmates often have roommates, get to
dine with the rest of the prisoners and do have contact with other human beings. Those who are put in an isolated environment are enduring a further punishment in the
context of the prison system. On the other hand, the isolation experienced in prison is perhaps a different kind. That is, prisoners see one another, but they do not know
what is happening in the real world. They are isolated from real life and live a captive existence with no freedom or control. The social isolation in prison can
do two things. One is that it will make the prisoners unstable and also provide a negative environment where they pick up unfavorable social definitions, and it creates monsters out
of the prison guards. Everyone is familiar with police brutality cases. They are plastered all over the news. In prison, the guards can become even more out of control as
there are fewer eyes watching them. A well known study done at Stanford University tested behaviors of people who were pretending to be either prisoners or prison guards ("The Stanford
Prison Experiment," 2009). While just a pretense, and a college experiment at that, the subjects began to behave in ways that would give cause for concern. Phillip Zimbardo was in
