Thesis that the trend is detrimental to children is introduced. C. Many of the girls grow up to do the same thing as did female role models in their community. II. Research on the Problem A. An argument is presented that all American children are exposed to such environments, which is refuted by research. 1. Research presented demonstrates that African American children are exposed to less positive environments. 2. Single parent families are the worst environments. 3. Conduct problems are characteristic of these families. B. Conclusion is made that life chances for black children from single mother homes are reduced. C. Stigma is an important part of the puzzle. III. Conclusion There is no quick answer to this serious problem. It is noted that this is a problem peculiar to the black community and only through eradication of poverty can the problem of black single motherhood be resolved. An African American girl named Devonna Ruckett seems to have everything any other American kid does, but what she lacks is an intact family with a live-in father (Ingrassia, 1993). She was born to a 16-year-old unwed mother without adequate financial resources and years later, Devonna at seven years old would divide her time between her grandmother and great-grandmothers homes (1993). This family is tied together by blood as well as by the phenomenon of single motherhood (1993).
