the idea that media claims that sex is the only way, or at least the best way, to sell items is no excuse for irresponsibility. A case in point is
the Abercrombie and Fitch catalog that features almost naked models, when the company sells clothes. People are amazed that the models wear nothing, when the items the company makes is
in fact clothing. Not only that, but its target audience is college age young adults and in one catalogue issue for example, the firm included an article entitled Drinking 101.
This caused a backlash and soon Abercrombie pulled the catalogue from stores ("A&F," 1998). Of course, the firm continues to try to push the envelope. They decided that in one
publication to reveal less skin than in the previous one, but the bathing suits were still very skimpy ("Two Steps Forward," 2004). Hence, little was accomplished. Indeed, this company continues
to sell its clothes by selling sex. Of course, Abercrombie is by no means the only firm guilty of supporting this trend. There are many other companies out there doing
the same thing. MTV and other similar television stations do exactly that as they show footage from Spring break where girls are wearing skimpy clothing. There is much allusion to
a lifestyle that supports drinking and taking drugs. This is true of television shows as well as commercials. The recent Paris Hilton ad caused much controversy and some say that
Carl Jr.s stepped over the line. In that commercial, Paris wears a very sexy swimsuit, while washing a car in a sexualized manner. All the while, she is eating a
Carl Jr.s burger. But the message is that sex is tied with everything from food to cigarettes to alcohol. This is a recent television commercial. Another recent advertisement comes from
