seeing aspects of life. They are stories that are filled with images that can be analyzed from many different perspectives and although they seem to focus on very different things,
different messages, there seems to be the theme that material possessions are easily destroyed or lost. The following paper first examines the stories individually and then presents a comparison and
contrast of the two. The Destructors This story is about a group of young boys, young men, who are perhaps delinquents. They decide that it would be fun
to destroy one individuals house, taking it apart while he is out of town. They engage in this project and by the end of a night it seems that they
have succeeded in completely demolishing his home, a home that has stood safe through bombings. It is a house that has remained standing while all other houses around it were
destroyed. In the end of the story we have the man seeing his house, gone, surprised and shocked and sad. The man with him is laughing, and states, "Theres nothing
personal, but you got to admit its funny" (Greene). The Rocking Horse Winner "The Rocking Horse Winner" is about a young boy who sees how his mother believes
in luck. The boy associates luck with money because his house seems to speak constantly of needing more money. He tells his mother in the end, "Mother, did I ever
tell you? I am lucky!" (Lawrence).The boy has a gift of being able to ride his rocking horse and see the winner of the upcoming horse races. He makes a
great deal of money and still the house screams for more and more money. In the end he rides so hard that he dies and his mother is left feeling
