in practice. Hence, they throw his theory out as something that was erroneous. At the same time, history is not the whole picture. One can say that perhaps Marx is
right but the revolution has barely started. After all, the idea that the chasm between the haves and the "have nots" is widening is something that few dispute. While the
middle class is shrinking, and perhaps there are more wealthy than ever before, the lower middle class seems to be having a tough time in todays society. Sometimes it seems
as if it is only a matter of time before Marxs theory comes to life. It is interesting to compare the status quo with what Marx theorized years ago. Is
it possible that the present society is fostering an eventual war that will effectively overthrow the rich? Marx (1848) said: "The lower middle class, the small manufacturer, the shopkeeper, the
artisan, the peasant, all these fight against the bourgeoisie, to save from extinction their existence as fractions of the middle class. They are therefore not revolutionary, but conservative." It does
seem to be the case that for example the Republican party in the United States is composed not only of rich people but also of lower middle class conservatives. It
is no accident that the Republican party is also conservative. If it were not, it would not be able to capture the hearts and minds of the lower middle class.
