He was a man who spoke the truth and desired that others do so as well, finding magic and wonders in science and not in the presumably unexplainable aspects of life. In his book "The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark" he attempts to illustrate how much of what we, as a society, feel is unexplainable is only seen as such because of the media and because of the society which desires to feed off of the unexplainable. In the following paper we present a summary and then a response to Sagans book. Summary Sagans book is a collection of twenty-five essays. Some of them have been written with his wife, Ann Druyan. As would be imagined, the essays range a great deal in their subject matter. But, the focus of the essays is essentially the same. Sagan discusses alien abductions, astrology, Atlantis, the Bell Curve, channeling, crop circles, demons, electromagnetism, ESP, the face on Mars, fairies, faith healing, magic, miracles, prayer, religion, Roswell, satanic rituals, therapy, as well as UFOs and extraterrestrial. In each essay he presents the reader with the perspective of skepticism. He provides us with clear evidence, studies, and uncovers many of the errors and weaknesses inherently possessed by those who would have us believe in such things as crop circles and alien abductions. He denounces the paranormalists, the psychotherapists, and many others who insist that there are an incredible amount of unexplainable and mystical realities. Sagan offers us, first, the argument that presents the foundation for our beliefs in the paranormal, as they originate from the United States.
