The recent toppling of the Republican Party from their majority control of Congress will doubtlessly translate into many political changes. The Democratic agenda includes the delegation of
more control everyday aspects of our lives to the government. They pay for this delegation, of course, through tax monies. One of the first changes we will undoubtedly
see with Democratic control of Congress, therefore, is increased taxes. Then we can expect a flurry of activity in regard to more permissive welfare provisions, more rigid gun control,
and more societal provisions for minorities, and left-wing issues such as gay rights. There will also be a whittling away of what little foothold religion still has in our
country. On a more positive note, there will likely be an increased attentiveness to environmental issues. The most prominent issue on the mind of Democrats today, however, is
the cessation of the war that is raging on in Iraq. The projections outlined above are based on history. The Democratic Party
is, in fact, stereotyped as the party of minorities and liberals and the Republicans as the predominantly white Christian Right. The Democratic Party is also a sore loser.
Because of this they will try to correct what they perceive as a past wrong. That wrong, in Democrats eyes at least, is the victory of George W. Bush
in the 2000 presidential election. Democrats will seek to put in play the provisions that Al Gore would have already have manipulated if he had won rather than lost
that election. When we consider the issues that are at a head in todays Congress, the war in Iraq is the most concerning.
