because they realize that there is little likelihood of getting caught. While students who download music illegally were made examples, few pay attention to the prospects of getting caught when
using their computers for unsavory pastimes. Indeed, there is a sense of anonymity when one is doing something in the privacy of their homes, which is why Internet pornography and
gambling are rampant. Internet gambling is especially controversial and in 2002, bets placed throughout the Internet were thought to be about $4 billion per year (Kristoff, 2002). There are two
ethical issues as it respects this dilemma, one of which pertains to gambling on the whole, and another that pertains to Internet gambling exclusively. One can make a case against
all forms of gambling. Many religious people oppose gambling, despite the fact that they use gambling fairs to raise money for churches. Some on the other side of the fence
believe that morality cannot be legislated. Yet, can or should gambling be thrown into a category where things like sex and drugs appear? Gambling can be an addiction, but some
scoff at that notion. Drugs can be physically addictive, but things like shopping and gambling and sex are technically not. Of course, there are admitted sex addicts and "shopohaulics." No
one would want to outlaw shopping or sex, but of course, sex and shopping are regulated. Prostitution is illegal in most states and shopping would for some time go by
the Sunday blue laws. Gambling is legal but that too is closely regulated. In examining gambling specifically, why should anyone care if someone wants to have a little fun and
gamble some of his or her own money? One problem with gambling is in fact gambling addiction, which experts claim is truly an addiction. Alexander & Roberts (2003) note that
