"building blocks." A pronoun is "a word that is used to replace a noun or noun phrase, often used to substitute for
a noun previously mentioned in order to avoid repetition" (Creative Writing for Teens, 2001). Pronouns can be categorized as personal, possessive, reflexive, demonstrative, reciprocal, relative, indefinite and interrogative (Creative
Writing for Teens, 2003). Personal pronouns are perhaps the most familiar, and include words like I, me, we, us, you, he, she, and them. Generally
speaking, the use of pronouns is most effective if a direct link can be made between the pronoun being used and the point of reference, or the noun being replaced
by the pronoun. For example: David walked to the store and then he took
the bus home. In this sentence, David is the noun and the word "he" is the personal pronoun that refers back to
this noun. He, then, is used to replace the word David in the beginning of the sentence. The second most recognizable form of pronoun is the
possessive pronoun, which not only refers to a noun, but also shows ownership. Possessive pronouns include words like my, mine, ours, his, hers, theirs. The following is a
