may argue were key in this decline. To start with we may argue that this was not a new decline,. The British Empire that covered nearly a quarter of the
globe only lasted a few hundred years. This may be seen in the attitude that was seen immediately prior to this time, as well as the power and resources that
were lost during the first world war. It was the cost of this war which we may argue brought about the position of a hegemony for the US< allowing it
to grow and dominate the globe due to increased trade, repealing the power that had been held by Britain. It was at
the end of the nineteenth century that an Imperial title was first used in India, when Benjamin Disreali convinced parliament to make her more than a queen of India, but
the Empress (Gilmour, 1997). This may have been seen as a reaction against the many colonial disputes that were taking place. This title had no impact on the running of
the country, but was very indicative of the attitude taken over the colony by the ruling nation (Gilmour, 1997). The confidence in Imperial rule of the colonies was being demonstrated,
perhaps over confidence following the 1857 mutiny which had been put down, with very few subsequent problems (Gilmour, 1997). This many not appear
to have any relationship to the events that were to occur later in the next century, however, to see the impact and the relevant we need to look at 1930s
