the issue. There were colonists who were against becoming independent and who desired to remain under the power, and protection, of Britain. On the other hand there were also colonists
who desired to be independent from England, knowing that they stood to gain the most from such independence. The following paper examines the perspective of a colonist who wanted independence
from England at the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence and Being a Colonist
Independence was crucial to the nation. Independence from Britain was necessary and the only righteous action the nation could take at the time. Things may have been different if Britain
were truly providing the newly developing nation with support and other necessities. But, the fact was that Britain was ultimately taking money, making laws, and controlling the newly developing nation
without doing anything but gaining from the hard labor of the new Americans. England was heavily taxing the United States and yet
offering them no real protection or representation. They were taking the money from the Americans, and thus making money off of doing nothing. The new nation was growing strong and
had been gradually doing so for many years. The British government, however, cared nothing for the new nation until it did become more profitable and at that point they laid
claim to the people and their money. This would have been acceptable to many colonists had they received representation in Parliament, back in England, but that was not the case.
