On the other hand, it seems that if testing is the criteria with which students are judged, they are not being judged in a well rounded manner. Anyone can memorize or perform tasks in order to beat the test. Many students who study for the SAT for example realize that there are certain ways to answer questions, or specific techniques, which will render them in a better light. In fact, many companies make money off of this fact, guaranteeing students a certain amount of points. Another problem with standardized testing is that teachers tend to teach to the test. Why not? If students will be judged almost exclusively by standardized tests, the classroom turns into a place where students simply learn how to take tests. For some, real learning is not accomplished. It is thwarted by the pressure for students to perform well on the tests. Again, this is controversial and there are no easy answers. When teachers-or readers of Teacher Magazine-- were polled about the situation, many answered that they do not think that standardized testing is effective in measuring what students really learn ("Readers Poll," 2006). The exact statement provided for readers to rate was as follows: "Standardized testing is an effective measure of student learning" ("Readers Poll," 2006, p.18). Only 29% said that they either agree or agree somewhat with that statement and many more-71%--disagreed with that statement ("Readers Poll," 2006, p.18). Of course, teachers do not like standardized tests because it limits good teachers.
