than the loss of a child. While a person cannot really show another person what is like to go through the pain of loss, they can help another understand something
of the process of pain and sorrow, which is an important reality in life for it allows people to know they are not alone in suffering. The following paper provides
a process presentation of the death of a spouse with the intention of sharing how loss and sorrow is universal. Death of a Spouse One of the most
harsh and painful and frightening experiences associated with the death of a spouse, in this case death from cancer, comes in the form of discovering the disease and its destructive
nature. Cancer is a word that is frightening for although it can be cured in many instances, there are also many cases where nothing can really be done. There is
an uncertainty, a sense of hope, but also a sense of powerful despair that anyone who has gone through the experience understands. There is a sense of hopelessness even if
there is hope. Aside from the sheer fear associated with the disease there is also the incredible fear of being alone without the spouse. When we love a person
that we expect to share our lives with we invest so much of ourselves in that other person that the thought of losing them leaves us empty. Without them we
envision that half of us would also be gone. And, part of the painful truth is that this is very real and losing that spouse is losing part of oneself
