discusses the two plots in the story. Discussion The news account: "TRAGEDY ON THE EL!" Earlier today a young boy known as "Samuel" was killed when he was thrown from
the car on which he was riding. Samuel and three of his friends, Alfred, Calvin and Tom, were standing on the platform between cars, despite regulations against it. Officials for
the elevated line said that they have trouble with youngsters riding outside the cars, but dont have the manpower to check each train for offenders. A woman passenger said
she told the boys that what they were doing was unsafe, but that they ignored her and found her suggestions laughable. After attempting to persuade them to come inside and
being rebuffed, she made no further attempts and simply waited for her stop. She said that another passenger pulled the emergency cord that stopped the train. It appears that the
sudden brake application caused Samuel to lose his balance and pitch forward over the safety chains to fall between the cars, where he was killed. Police have ruled the death
accidental, and the company adds that this is not the first time a boy has been killed in this manner. Last summer another boy fell from the car platform, and
two years prior to that, a youngster lost his life when he slipped while walking the tracks and hit the third rail. The two stories: There are a number of
plots in the story, and at least the suggestion that Samuels death was not an accident but murder. The story on the surface is that of Samuel and his friends,
