character that has many similarities and difference to that of Gregor Samsa in Franz Kafkas short story "The Metamorphosis." They are both men who are confronting their slow decline, their
descent into an illness, or condition, which will lead to their death. They both go through experiences relating to their illness and death that are strange and painful and offer
something of a horrific end. The following paper examines their descent into the illness or affliction, and their journeys towards and into death. "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" and
"The Metamorphosis" In terms of the physical, in Gregors situation he wakes up one day confused by the fact he is now a
large bug. He does not really make this assumption or realization in concrete terms but he has many legs and is unable to physically engage in his normal activities of
getting dressed, etc. In the case of Ivan he is suffering physically from something no one can understand, something that may be related to an injury, but yet never really
understood or defined. In his case people begin to essentially think he is making it up, that his problems are not real as he makes a slow and painful decline
into death. Both characters are, for the most part, dismissed gradually by their family. They are ignored, and their loved ones prefer
to even envision that they do not exist in many ways. This presents the reader with a very sad look at the pain of death and illness and the process
of dying. These people, these two men, are dying alone and apparently unloved. This is something that is presented differently in the two stories, yet in this one can
