make a living. They are relatively simple men looking to survive during the Great Depression when work was hard to find. The men are George and Lennie. Lennie is mentally
challenged and essentially has difficulty with reality. He is a huge man and is really nothing more than a child, unaware of his own strength. George takes care of him
and tries to watch out for him. In this story Lennie inadvertently chokes a woman, Curleys wife. It is an event that is not his fault, nor is it the
wifes fault. The following paper examines how it is symbolically the fault of the society in which these people lived. Lennie and Curleys Wife It is in Chapter
Five when Lennie is in the barn and Curleys wife, a woman who wants more from life, comes into the barn and all but flirts with Lennie because she is
bored. Lennie talks to her about how he and George are going to have a farm someday and he will get to have rabbits. He goes on and on about
how much he loves rabbits and Curleys wife essentially makes fun of him, always calling him "nuts." He says he loves rabbits because they are so soft and so nice
to pet. Then Curleys wife starts to tell Lennie how soft her hair is and how she loves to brush it because it is so soft, inviting Lennie to touch
it, which leads to him hurting her, her screaming, and him killing her, by accident, because he does not want people to hear her scream. These two people are
very different and yet clearly products of the society. No one really understands or accepts Lennie for the simple man and loving man that he is. Curleys wife calls him
