The story is told as the man lies dying, thinking back on how his world changed, how he changed, and how he has conducted himself throughout life. There is a
sense of understanding that this man, Cruz, should be examining his life from a worthy or noble perspective in relationship to finding some meaning or morality in his actions, or
perhaps some sorrow at his misdeeds, but in truth there seems to be little. The following paper analyzes whether Cruz understands the immorality of his life, if he judges himself,
or if the reader is expected to judge him. The Death of Artemio Cruz by Carlos Fuentes The reader must first, perhaps,
understand that much of what Fuentes presents in the novel, through the character of Cruz, is likely a look at the history of Mexico itself symbolized in the character of
Cruz. As such it does not need to be moralistic or ethical. As one author notes, "when Fuentess novel is read as if Artemio were a personification of Mexico" there
is perhaps no judgment or morality, only history and a "fragmented psyche" (Cunniffe). In light of this particular perspective one could well argue that Cruz does not understand anything about
the morality, or immorality, of his actions. He does, of course seem to realize that much of what he lost, long ago, was lost when he true love died. But,
that is not really a moral understanding, but rather seemingly an excuse for his actions following her death. It does not appear
as though he judges himself in the end. In truth he seems to simply present death as something that happens to all people and through all of the work which
