minds. Of course, they only need a reasonable doubt to hang the jury, and one was never found. And while there is never a situation where all doubt can be
alleviated, there are questions about the case which linger. Does one want to put someone to death when there is no confession or a great deal of physical evidence to
convict? Is the death penalty ever appropriate? It has been a long battle. Opponents of the penalty contend that no one can ever be certain of a persons guilt. If
later on evidence is found that redeems the convicted, it will be too late. The state would have executed an innocent man. The death penalty is one that has been
a considerable issue in terms of criminal law. Documentaries have been done showing a person on death row in the last hours of their lives. It is heartbreaking, particularly when
the convicted claim to be innocent. Indeed, with things like the innocence project where DNA is now freeing death row inmates who are erroneously convicted, the possibly of error
looms large. In fact, if capital punishment is construed as something that is aligned simply with an appropriate punishment for a heinous crime, and a deterrent, does it not rate
as sensible? In some ways, although error is always a possibility, there are good reasons for the punishment. Proponents of capital punishment usually cite the reasons for imposing the
