by K. Von Huben 5/2010 Please Introduction Macbeth is one of Shakespeares greatest tragedies, in the
Aristotelian sense of the word: it shows us a great man doomed by a tragic flaw, in this case ambition. This paper discusses the motivation that drives Macbeth and his
lady, as well as what happens to them after Macbeth becomes king. Discussion One of the most difficult characters in all of Shakespeare is Iago, the villain in Othello; he
sets out to destroy Othello but has no readily apparent motive for doing so. Something similar can be said of Lady Macbeth: she decides immediately upon receiving Macbeths letter describing
the witches prophesy that the only thing they can do is to murder Duncan; why she has made this decision is clear: she is ambitious for her husband to take
the throne and thus make her queen. What isnt clear is where her driving ambition comes from. However, unlike Iago, not knowing the foundational motive behind her actions is not
unsettling because there is a recognizable motive. That is, although we dont know where it comes from, we can recognize her ambition, and that is enough to satisfy us that
she has a reason for her actions. When Macbeth encounters the witches, he is completely taken by the idea of the prophesy that he will become king. He doesnt see
why it should be so, since Duncan is on the throne and the Thane of Cawdor is still alive; but it seems that the "Weird Sisters" awaken something in him,
