(5pp) Compares the James Joyce short story with
John Houston's 1987 movie of the same name. Joyce
has written a subtle quiet story reflecting the
maturing love of two individuals within a historic
framework. Distancing this relationship within a
time frame and place - the Irish countryside at
Christmas --allows us to more readily deal with the
intimacy and the varying shifts of love which the
story –on the page and on film—present.

viewer to bring their own experiences and history to the work. Some have described Gabriel and Gretta Conroys marriage as an unhappy one. Certainly, its subtly challenged. As in
all complex relationships, we encounter times when perceptions about one another are confronted, reshaped, broken down or renewed; and yet when we finally do reach some point of wisdom within
a relationship, as Gabriel does, we realize that constant grow-cycling process is what true relationship is about. In the
final scene, after the traditional Christmas celebration in the aging aunts home, the two are alone in a hotel room. In this stage rendition, Gabriel questions his wife, Gretta, about
a song she sang earlier in the evening, one that is unfamiliar to him. (The song is sung by another guest.) He realizes the mysterious effect this tune has on
her and this disturbs him. He is surprised that there is something about this woman that he still does not know. Over the process of the evening,
Gabriel learns that the song brought to Grettas mind a recollection of a young man from her home county. Pressing her further, he discovers this young man, Michael Furey, at
the time they knew each other, was no more than a boy of seventeen, is in fact, someone who once loved Gretta and is now long dead, except for that
residual in her imagination which the music draws forward in the Christmas light. In Gabriel, we see a man who
