and yet powerful story as well as its very straightforward cinematic perspectives. Through the story, a simple story that talks of the possibilities for mankind, and the straightforward filming techniques
we are given a very subtle and incredibly powerful film. The following paper analyzes the story and cinematography which makes "The Day the Earth Stood Still" such a classic.
The Story and Cinematography As alluded to, science fiction films often rely on a great deal of special effects and battle scenes to present an image that truly speaks
of the genre of science fiction. We see this all the time in modern films and in the films from the past they used whatever methods of cinematography they could
to present images of the future. Flying saucers, great battle scenes, and many other special effect elements were brought into play in the films of the past in order to
create a spectacular science fiction film, or a spectacular film for the time period. "The Day the Earth Stood Still," however, rarely uses such camera tricks to get the story
across, and thus get the power of the film across. The predominant focus of the film is the story and the man who is an alien. It is a simple
story really, as it involves Klaatu, an alien leader who wishes to get all the leaders of earth together because he has a very important message. He is a relatively
simple and peaceful individual and this is presented to us through the straightforward camera shots of his interaction with others. There is not glitz and glamour involved in these shots
