story about cowboys and ranchers and the discord between them and their ideals and dreams. At the center of this novel lies the town wherein they all reside, to some
extent, and also a town that would change forever with the passage of the free cowboys. The following paper examines the conflicts in the town within the novel.
The Day the Cowboys Quit by Elmer Kelton In this story, as mentioned, there is tension and trouble between the big ranchers coming in with money, and the cowboys who
have long lived there free ranging cattle. The big money ranchers tell the Mexicans if they do not leave voluntarily they will be forcibly moved and then as soon as
they sign over their property their houses get burned. This is something told to the reader by a character Fant, who is clearly illustrating the tensions within the town in
the beginning. It sets the stage for understanding how the big money ranchers simply want control over all the land, and how cowboys work. This essentially is eliminating much of
the freedoms that the cowboys have, or think they have. In this town, and all the land that lies outside the town
but is part of the town because of the members of the community, cowboys have long done most of the work. Those men who come in with a lot of
money feel it is a good investment to become ranchers and they want to control what the cowboys do, how they ride, where they ride, what they own, and where
they can run cattle. Fant tells another character, as it clearly pertains to the town, "It was the little men that built this town, and without them itll die.....they can
