There are references to her in many of his sonnets, and just as many different theories about her. SONNET 127 When one reads Shakespeares Sonnet 127 it is
evident there are several different characters mentioned. But the one most mysterious and least comprehensible is the one that is considered known as The Dark Lady. Not only
is her name never mentioned, but also one is hard-pressed to even identify what he means by the Dark Lady. Is this a real person? Is she a
symbol of something? Neither do we know if he is speaking of a woman with dark hair, or a woman who is of African descent. The fact is
it is necessary to read the sonnet several times to come to some semblance of understanding about this mysterious person. In fact there are many mentions of her in
other sonnets as well, but for this particular paper the focus is entirely on Sonnet 127. Many attest to the fact that the Dark Lady is indeed a real person
and not a symbol of something intangible. In this sonnet the Dark Lady appears to be a mistress, someone who incites an irrepressible lust but yet is considered sinful.
In this way the sinfulness is likened to the darkness, since evil and dark tend to go hand in hand. And the fact that one is a mistress
or is being lusted after adds to the guilt as well (Theories of the Dark Lady 2002). As we read further into the sonnet and as is found out
