Prevalence of Use As noted, the use of these drugs is extremely wide-spread, but just how prevalent is it? The answer is disturbing: "Approximately 1-3 million people in the United States have used anabolic steroids ... with usage rates as high as 12% among young men and 2% among young women" (Ormsbee and Vukovich, 2005, p. 60). Users include professional athletes, Olympians, and teens who play high-school sports; the mean age at which they begin using these drugs is 14 (Ormsbee and Vukovich, 2005). Studies have found that many, if not most, of these users "refuse to believe that the drugs are a great risk to their health"; a study done in 2004 found that "56% of users never discussed their steroid use with a medical professional" (Ormsbee and Vukovich, 2005, p. 60). Steroid use is increasing among nonathletes as well, especially men who use the drugs for bodybuilding (Ormsbee and Vukovich, 2005). Their search for the "ideal" male body type, which they tend to define as lean and muscular, with a "six pack" of rippling abs, has led to "a new body image known as muscle dysmorphia, or reverse anorexia, a condition in which males never feel big enough" (Ormsbee and Vukovich, 2005, p. 60). Even older adults are using these drugs in an attempt "to fight off the effects of aging" (Ormsbee and Vukovich, 2005, p. 60).
