primary users are white, eighteen to twenty-five year old, males (Winslow, Voorhees and Pehl, 2007). Estimates vary, however, as to how many Americans overall use meth. Bender (2007),
for example, reports that some 1.5 to 2.5 percent of Americans use methamphetamine (Bender, 2007). The 2007 National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, in contrast, reports that approximately 2.8
percent of adults between eighteen and twenty-six years of age have used meth in the last year (Winslow, Voorhees and Pehl, 2007).
Certain lifestyles are more associated with meth use than are others. One study reports, for example, that 5 percent of young males in low-income neighborhoods and urban HIV-positive
males reporting they have had sex with other men use meth (Cohen, Shuler, McAllister et. al, 2007). An even more disturbing finding is that 13 percent of men in
six large US cities that have sex with other men have also used meth in the preceding six months (Winslow, Voorhees and Pehl, 2007).
While the estimated number of individuals that use meth obviously varies considerably, one thing that does not vary is the incredibly negative impact that meth has on
these individuals health and welfare and, in fact, on the health and welfare of society overall. Those that use meth often become addicted to meth. In one treatment
program in Montana, some twenty percent of the individuals there are there because of meth (McGrath, 2007). One reason that meth
